Rock music might get blown around by the whims of fashion but take a trip through the decades and you find that although the song might not remain the same, the moustache does.

Rock mos of the 50s

Chuck Berry

John Lennon said: “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry’.” Chuck Berry’s first release was “Maybelline” in 1955, which reached No.5 in the U.S. He’s now 83 still selling records and still sporting his legendary pencil mustache.

Little Richard

Little Richard, born Richard Wayne Penniman, has been credited by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as “laying the foundation for rock and roll”. In 1955 he smashed the charts with “Tutti Frutti” and in 1957 he gave up stardom for religion. Still wearing his pencil moustache with style, Reverend Richard now divides his time between performing and preaching.

Ike Turner

Probably more famous for his rocky relationship with Tina Turner than his music and mo. Ike first had a hit in 1951 under the name of “Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats” with “Rocket 88″. A tune that many consider to be the first ever rock and roll song. Ike’s chevron mo stayed with him throughout his long musical career until his death in 2007.

Ted Nugent

Since 1958 Ted Nugent has released 34 albums and sold over 30 million records. Ted started his music career in the Amboy Dukes and has since had successful solo spells. His chevron (nearly fu manchu) moustache faded away in the eighties when he formed the Damn Yankees.

Rock mos of the 60s

Frank Zappa

Frank Zappa started his musical career drumming for a band at school, but soon developed in to a legendary composer, electric guitarist, record producer and film director. Some say he wore an imperial with a soul patch, others a horseshoe with a royale. We think his moustache is distinctive enough to be called “The Zappa”. Sadly he died of prostate cancer in 1993 aged 53.

The Beatles

The Beatles started out as fresh faced lads from Liverpool and became one of the “20th century’s 100 most important and influential people” according to Time magazine. It was during the Sgt Pepper years that The Beatles earnt their place amongst the Rock Mo Legends. During their career, the band have defined hair fashions changing styles with every album, only Ringo Starr had the dedication to keep his mo whilst riding the Yellow Submarine.

Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix is often labelled the greatest electric guitarist in the history of rock music. His mo never quite fulfilled it’s potential, which is a sad reflection of his life. Hendrix’s career defining moment was headlining the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival, but his career, mo and life was short lived. Jimi Hendrix died 18 September 1970, asphyxiated by his own vomit.

Carlos Santana

Carlos Santana formed his group “Santana” in 1966 and released his 2 x Multi-Platinum album “Santana” in 1969. Whilst his album and band names were uninventive, his walrus moustache and music has endured. Featuring mo wearers Eagle Eye Cherry and Wyclef Jean, Santana’s collaborative album “Supernatural” was a massive commercial success in 1999.

Black Sabbath

Formed in 1968, Black Sabbath have had twenty two former band members, so it’s hard to pick out a favourite mo. Particularly as Ozzy Osbourne the most famous of all members, never wore a mo and was fired in 1979 for drinking too much. However due to their legendary rock status and the great moustaches demonstrated in this photo we had to include them.

Rock mos of the 70s

Supertramp

Originally named “Daddy”, Supertramp were formed in 1970 and their first two albums were a commercial failure. However after the first of many reshuffles they found fame in 1979 with the album “Breakfast in America”. Supertramp band members generally have a preference of beards over going it alone with a mo, but their love of facial hair we thought deserved recognition.

Eagles

Eagles need no introduction, their album Hotel California is ranked 37th in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Their quality moustaches are held in equally high esteem. It’s just a shame Don Henley had to spoil the band’s look by growing a beard. Despite that Eagles continue to tour and sell out massive stadiums across the world.

Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead

Ian Fraser Kilmister allegedly gets his name from his regular request as a kid “Lemmy a quid till Friday”. Lemmy was a roadie for Jimi Hendrix and played with Hawkwind before forming Motorhead. His mutton chop and imperial moustache combo, along with a successful rock career has lead to a film being made of his legendary life called “Lemmy” and due for release in 2010.

Freddy Mercury of Queen

Freddy Mercury has been referred to as “Britain’s first Asian rock star”, as he was a Parsi and grew up in India. Rolling Stone ranked him number 18 on their list of the 100 greatest singers of all time. As singer and songwriter with “Queen” he has sold more than 300 million albums. His painters brush moustache was as distinctive as his career and life which sadly came to an end in 1991.

Rock mos of the 80s

James Hetfield of Metallica

James Hetfield’s mother was an opera singer and encouraged him to play the piano, but by the age of fourteen he found the guitar. Since 1981 James has played rhythm guitar and sung for Metallica. His fu manchu has on occasion formed a goatee, but he learnt his lesson when this unnecessary growth was badly burnt in a onstage pyrotechnic accident in 1992.

Derek Smalls of Spinal Tap

Derek Smalls and Spinal Tap are fictional, but Harry Shearer and his mighty mo were very real. Spinal Tap and Derek Smalls became the fictional subject of the 1984 rockumentary/mockumentary film This Is Spinal Tap. Derek Smalls is said to still be enjoying his burl-wood pipe on occasion and continues to enhance the fit of his trousers with a strategically placed foil-wrapped zucchini.

Faith No More

Originally formed as “Faith No Man” in 1981, “Faith No More” was born a year later. Whilst being commercially successful, they’ve had a troubled life with a mixture of mos, goatees and musicians until they spilt up in 1998. However in June 2009 they picked up their guitars, tidied their facial hair and performed again at the Brixton Academy for the first of many more gigs.

Nick Cave

Nick Cave is best known as the frontman of the critically acclaimed rock band “Nick Cave and the Badseeds” formed in 1984. He has also fronted “The Birthday Party” and “Grinderman” as well as having a successful solo career. In addition to his ecclectic range of rock music, Nick Cave is widely admired for sporting a fine Zapata moustache (named after the mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata).

Pantera

Pantera were labelled as the fifth best “heavy metal band of all time” by MTV. Formed in 1981 they enjoyed 20 years of rock stardom, until they officially split in 2003. All members were keen on heavy facial hair, but Dimebag Darrell had the best moustache. Unfortunately his fatal shooting whilst on stage in 2004 sealed the fate of Pantera.

Rock mos of the 90s

Jack White of The White Stripes

Jack White (born John Gillis) was an upholsterer before forming The White Stripes in 1997. The band consists just of Jack and his ex-wife Meg White (often confused as his sister), and has since sold approximately 12 million albums. Since then Jack has formed The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather and various facial hair arrangements including this chevron moustache with chin fluff.

Jesse Hughes – Eagles of Death Metal

Jesse “The Devil” Hughes spent several of his post-graduate years as manager of a Video Depot in the Palm Desert. Life started when he and Josh Homme formed the band Eagles of Death Metal in 1998. You may not have their album but if you watch TV in America or play video games you’ve probably heard their music (Budweiser ad, Gran Turismo 4 and many more). If none of these achievements are remembered then his mighty horseshoe mo should.

Kings Of Leon

The Kings of Leon was formed in 1999 and consists of three brothers and a cousin. The band was named after the three brother’s father and grandfather “Leon”. The song “Sex on Fire” won the band a Grammy earlier this year. These southern American boys all started out as long haired hippies, but as they have become more successful their hair has become shorter and face cleaner. Shame on you.

ADOLF HITLER

Arguably the most famous moustache in history. Adolf Hitler’s abominable crimes are well-documented but one of the least discussed (and it’s fair to say the priorities are absolutely correct in this instance) is that he made the toothbrush moustache completely unacceptable in modern society.

The other famous exponent of the toothbrush was of course Charlie Chaplin, who Hitler admired – in fact, he is thought by some to have modelled his mo on the comic actor’s very own. Which would be ironic as Chaplin went on to satirize Hitler in the film The Great Dictator. We doubt he got the joke though.

JOSEPH STALIN

What is it with evil dictators and moustaches? Bloodthirsty megalomaniacs seem intent on bringing the mo into disrepute. Soviet leader Joseph Stalin was another example, favouring a much fuller moustache than his German arch-enemy in a style connoisseurs might call a ‘Hungarian’.

Stalin was responsible for a reign of terror in the Soviet Union which some historians say claimed as many 20 million victims through execution, forced resettlement, famine and imprisonment. However, his style of moustache has survived the stigma of the Hitler equivalent and is still favoured by country & western singers and real ale drinkers to this day.

ALBERT EINSTEIN

The list of achievements of Albert Einstein is long and distinguished. Best known for his theory of relativity, he also won the Nobel Prize for Physics, the Max Planck Medal and was voted the Person of the 20th Century by Time magazine.

So when a man of such genius, intelligence and credentials sees fit to spend his entire adult life sporting a bushy growth of facial hair on his upper lip, you’ve got to see that as an overwhelming endorsement for the moustache. Who can seriously argue that a mo isn’t a smart choice when it’s got the backing of Einstein? The theory of relativity is often summed up as E=mc2. We won’t pretend to know what that means but we’d like to think that the ‘m’ stands for ‘moustache’ and the ‘c’ stands for ‘cool’.

MAHATMA GANDHI

Gandhi spread the message of passive resistance and showed the power of peaceful protest. Some even credit him with bringing down the British Empire. A holy man with non-material values, he wore only plain white robes and shaved his head.

But we’re pleased to say the shaving didn’t go as far as the upper lip. Some things are sacred! It’s clear that Gandhi understood the power of the moustache and used it to devastating effect (albeit in an entirely peaceful way). You might call him Mahatma Gandhi – we call him MOhatma Gandhi.

JOHN, PAUL, GEORGE AND RINGO

In the early Sixties, Beatlemania swept both sides of the Atlantic as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr unleashed their unique sound and conquered the world, leaving millions of screaming girls in their wake. By 1966 they were thought to be at the top of their game but what they did next thrilled and amazed in equal measure.

That’s right, they all grew moustaches. The accepted wisdom is that the Beatles gave up touring in ’66 to concentrate on developing their studio work and that the groundbreaking album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is the result of that. But the truth is surely that they took time out for some mo growing and didn’t want anyone to see them in that tricky ‘in between’ stage. They certainly started a trend and soon you couldn’t be a bona fide rock star without a moustache. Times have changed but the legacy remains.

MARTIN LUTHER KING

Much like Gandhi, civil rights leader Martin Luther King preached the power of peaceful protest. And also like the Indian sage, King fully embraced the power of the mo.

On his way to heroically furthering the African-American civil rights cause and becoming an international icon in the process, King delivered a famous speech remembered for the line ‘I have a dream’. That dream was equality. We share that dream. We also believe that men should not be judged by the fullness of their moustache, but by their willingness to embrace the power of the mo for a good cause. That’s what Movember is all about.

SADDAM HUSSEIN

Another representative of the dark side of the mo, Saddam Hussein rounded off the last century by filling the role of moustachioed international all-round bad guy before meeting a sorry end in the current one.

His list of crimes is long and heinous and right at the bottom of that list (yes, again we have our priorities right here) is poor moustache maintenance. Honestly, did you see the state of his facial hair when the US troops finally pulled him out of his hidey hole in Iraq? Despicable.

There was a time when all leading men around the world stood proud with their Moustaches but in recent years (dare we say it?) Mo’s became quite unfashionable. What happened? Could it go back as far as the 1970’s when flabby Germans trotted round in blue movies just quite simply – put us off?

Although women may not be begging their men to grow a Mo if you ask a girl if they like their men to look manly then the answer is usually yes. What could be manlier than facial hair?

Luckily for Mo’s Bros the MO might just be back in town! Lets look at the evidence…there is Will Ferrell in Anchorman (a tashe not to be forgotten!), George Clooney regularly grows one for various film roles and of course Jack Black took on a hairy lip in Nacho Libre. So with tides turning in popular culture (and of course to prove our point) we thought we would showcase some of the world’s sexiest tashes to show you that a well styled Mo won’t get the ladies running in the other direction

Australian wheelchair athlete and Paralympic champion Kurt Fearnley, who recently won a record fourth successive New York Marathon to go with his gold medals from the marathons at the Athens and Beijing Games, has completed an arduous crawl (yes, crawl) along the 96-kilometre long Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, reports ABC News.

And guess what? It was all in aid of Movember. Fearnley, who was born without a complete spinal cord and was not expected to live for more than a week when he was born, was keen to raise awareness for men’s health problems after losing a male family member to depression.

Unable to use his wheelchair on the trek, Fearnley had to teach himself to crawl again, like he did in the bush around his childhood home.

The Paralympic gold medallist spent a whole year working with a bootmaker to design special shin pads and wrist guards for the trek and he had to teach himself to crawl again, like he did in the bush around his childhood home.

Fearnley admitted to ABC that there were moments during the trek when he thought about quitting.

“Mate, I just was hurting. It was the toughest thing I’ve ever done,” he said.

But he stuck at it and added to his already impressive list of achievements. That’s what we call heroic!

Understanding the opposite sex – not easy, even for the smartest people! We all must have wondered at some time whether the opposite sex might have actually originated from another planet.

Yet when it comes to cancer it doesn’t matter which side of the universe you come from as it terrifies all of us. Two of the most common cancers in the UK are breast cancer for women and prostate cancer for men. No divide here, no misunderstandings – we need each other’s support.

With 125 women’s lives being turned upside down every single day due to being diagnosed with breast cancer, it’s up to their loved ones to rally round and support them. For men diagnosed with prostate cancer it’s no different. You won’t find a better reason to forget about what divides us and support the opposite sex.

So with that in mind, we have put together a list of blogs to inspire and encourage support. We might not always be able to agree with the opposite sex but the better we take care of them, the better they will take care of us!

Twinkle Twinkles

This blog is written by Marjory and Gordon Cameron – a fantastic and inspiring collaboration. Gordon is a family doctor and Marjory a nurse. Gordon not only has a medical background but also first hand experience of what it is like dealing with breast cancer as Marjory was diagnosed with the disease in 2006. The site is aimed to help others affected by breast cancer – sufferers as well as their loved ones and friends. The authors share their stories and experiences while also providing medical information in a very personal way.

His Prostate Cancer

Aimed at wives and partners of those diagnosed with prostate cancer, this blog offers support to those giving support themselves. It provides valuable information for cases where prostate cancer has recently been diagnosed or returned. A very helpful aspect of the site is that it tends to cover questions you might be thinking about but were perhaps too embarrassed to ask.

My Wife With Cancer

This blog is a journey – the journey of a truly inspiring couple whose sadness is turned to strength and whose frustration becomes motivation. An extremely touching account of the everyday drama they face together.

Well Women Blog

Full of helpful hints and tips on a wide range of subjects, this site features a breast cancer section which provides advice, information, latest news and real life stories. It covers topics which you probably haven’t even thought about.

Blog For A Cure

It’s not just one blogger but a whole community of bloggers all sharing their experiences. There is a huge support network on this blog and you can read about various encounters and interact with different people. All types of cancer are covered and you’ll find many breast and prostate cancer blogs.

So whether you’re male or female, Movember is calling for your help to raise awareness of prostate cancer, the most common cancer for men in the UK.

If you have come across any great blogs we have missed, why not leave a comment to tell us about them? Please, let’s support each other!

If you want to add a hint of distinction to your avatar, then give your pic a moustache with our Plan Your Mo app.

There’s lots of reasons to give it a go. You can add a Dali to your favourite portrait, a Fu Manchu to your Facebook and Twitter avatars or add a handlebar to any photo you fancy.

By adding a moustache to your avatar you’re showing your friends that you support Movember, and it helps raise awareness for Prostate Cancer.

As your facial hair begins to take shape you can use the planner to try out the different moustache styles. Is your face better suited to a super mario or a pencil type moustache?

It’s also great fun adding mos to photos of your pets, friends and family, so have a laugh and give it a go.

To add style and sophistication to your avatar and photos, follow these five simple steps:

1. Go to the Plan Your Mo page.

2. Upload your photo.

3. Select your favourite style of moustache.

4. Adjust the size and colour if your moustache.

5. Then download the finished product or export to your Facebook and Twitter profiles.

Works for ladies avatars …
