Prostate Cancer Blogs for information and inspiration

Movember is about growing a moustache and having some fun, but it’s also about improving awareness and raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Charity.  So here are some blogs that will provide information and inspiration in the fight against prostate cancer.

Prostablog

This is the blog of Jim Tucker, a prostate cancer sufferer who was motivated to write an account of his experience with the disease because official literature is naturally written from the viewpoint of medical and support professionals rather than sufferers. Jim says: “A key aim is to persuade men my age to get themselves checked regularly and properly.”

Advanced Prostate Cancer

This blog is from Malecare, a non-profit organisation providing information and support to prostate cancer sufferers. The Advanced Prostate Cancer blog offers advice and help for men with advanced and recurrent prostate cancer, encouraging those affected to share their experiences. The blog is ran by Joel, a sufferer himself.

Prostate Cancer Infolink

This site contains a news and opinion blog with a multitude of articles on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. There is also a mentoring service, through which readers can seek answers to specific questions. Also part of the site is the Prostate Cancer InfoLink Social Network, where patients, family members, health care professionals, and others can meet online to learn from and support each other in addressing all the effects of the disease.

Prostate Cancer Advocacy and Action

Prostate Cancer Advocacy and Action is a blog from Malecare which provides prostate cancer activism and treatment news. It also features basic information about the disease and the prostate itself. The publishers say: “We are certain that a daily reading of the Prostate Cancer Action Blog will become a dynamic supplement to [sufferers'] care and will incite a spirit of participation in the national dialogue.”

Living with Prostate Cancer

Another blog by Malecare, this one is by Leah, a “savvy prostate cancer reader, writer and spouse”. As such, the blog focuses entirely on issues generated by and for men diagnosed with prostate cancer and their friends and family. Leah says: I try to write passionately and compassionately, with a liberal sprinkling of humour and poetry. But there is plenty of substantive information as well.”

Blue September

Blue September is a prostate cancer campaigning organisation in New Zealand which aims to spread awareness of the disease. They say: “Every year about 600 men in New Zealand die of Prostate Cancer… This happens because men don’t know how dangerous the disease is, they don’t talk to their doctor about it, they simply don’t do anything about it. This has to stop.” The website provides news and information on the organisation’s events and competitions, as well as information on the disease.

Medicine World

MedicineWorld.Org is maintained under the supervision of a physician who is American board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. The site provides information for patients and physicians on a range of conditions and this blog is dedicated to prostate cancer. There are posts on the latest news, developments and risks surrounding the disease.

Prostate Cancer Journey

This blog details one man’s battle with prostate cancer. The man in question is JC, aged 58, first diagnosed at age 55 with a very rare and dangerously aggressive (only a 0.1% survival rate) form of prostate cancer. “This is essentially a detailed diary of what I went through in this tough battle with this very dangerous form of cancer,” he explains.

His Prostate Cancer

This is a prostate cancer blog for wives and partners of those suffering from the disease. The authors say: “Our mission is to empower spouses and partners with information, help and hope so they can better cope with their loved one’s prostate cancer.” The site contains basic information on the disease as well advice on treatments, sex life, managing stress and nutrition. There are also stories of hope, questions and answers and news.

PSA Rising

PSA Rising provides news, information and support in a mision to empower men to avoid, overcome, survive and/or live with disease with well-being and dignity. The organisers say: “What makes our mission distinctive is that we have always focused on gathering and reporting information from a patient-centered, evidence-based standpoint.” The blog offers opinions on the latest news and issues surrounding prostate cancer.

Conquer Prostate Cancer

This blog is from the authors of the book ‘Conquer Prostate Cancer – How Medicine, Faith, Love and Sex can Renew Your Life’, Rabbi Ed Weinsberg and Dr. Robert Carey. It provides information and advice for patients, survivors, wives, partners, family members or friends. There are tips and guidance as well as research and treatment updates.

The Palpable Prostate

The Palpable Prostate provides information on prostate cancer from medical journal articles and a variety of other sources, including, Google, Medical News Today, ScienceDaily, UroToday, Pubmed and Amedeo. The blog is built with links to the individual items, which readers can click on to get the full stories.
