Ultimate Shaving Guide
The perfect shave should leave your face smooth and irritation free with no nicks, cuts or razor burns. Follow our 10 easy steps.
- Don't shave first thing in the morning, wait for 10 minutes and let the puffiness caused by fluid collection overnight fade away.
- Exfoliate before you shave to get rid of dead skin and help prepare the pores for your shave.
- Wet your stubble with warm or hot water before shaving. It opens the hair shaft to the blades cut your hair not your skin.
- Thoroughly massage shaving cream into your stubble to help soften the hair and help protect against nasty razor rashes and burns.
- Make sure your blades are sharp. Dull blades are the culprit for most shaving accidents. A new blade will stop any dragging of the razor over your face.
- Use gentle pressure against your beard and shave with the grain of the hair.
- Shave the most sensitive area of your face first - the neck and below the jawbone - then move up the face.
- Rinse the blade in hot water when shaving and use slow short strokes. It'll stop any drag that the razor may make to your skin.
- Apply oil free moisturiser to soothe, protect and invigorate your skin.
- Be careful of mentholated shaving products. They may give you a nice cool sensation at first, but menthol can be irritating to the skin.
Moisturise And Protect
- If you want skin that the ladies just can't keep their hands off, then invest in some good quality grooming products!
- After shaving, rinse your face thoroughly with cool water and pat dry (don't rub).
- Moisturise your face to soothe, protect and invigorate your skin. Be careful to use a product without alcohol to stop avoid any stinging. It'll help get rid of little dry patches and reveal a refreshed look.
- For best results aftershave should be used behind the earlobes and on the sides of the neck not directly to the area that has been shaved.
Common Shaving Mistakes
Shaving needs to be done correctly to avoid things such as skin irritation and even ingrown hair. So what are some of the most common mistakes?
Shave in the direction of hair growth - shaving against the grain of the beard causes friction when the razor passes over the skin and can cause razor burn and ingrown hairs.
Have a hot shower and then prepare your stubble with a good quality foam or gel to soften the hair and make sure bristles can be cut without pulling and irritating the skin.
Invest in a good sharp razor - blunt or dull blades can increase irritation and do not protect the skin.
